In a world where priorities shift constantly, it's easy to
lose sight of what truly matters. For those of us committed to living a life of
faith, honoring God is a daily pursuit that anchors us in purpose and
fulfillment. But what does it mean to truly honor God? And how can we make it a
central part of our lives? I know for me I want to live my life in a way that
when others see my life, it causes them to examine their own lives and self
reflect on how they are truly living. And I'm not saying in any way that I'm
perfect or that I live a perfect life. I do strive for excellence and my true
intention is to live to the highest standard and that is the standard of
Christ. I do miss the mark and fall short sometimes and who doesn't. As humans
we fall short and it's okay! I repeat, it's okay. When we fall short and are
aware of our shortcomings, ask for forgiveness, repent, and keep going living a
life that honors God. Don't be so hard on yourself.
What It Means to Honor God
Honoring God goes beyond attending church services or
participating in religious activities. It’s about living in a way that reflects
God’s character and His will for our lives. The Bible tells us, "So
whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of
God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). Honoring God means that in everything we
do—our words, our actions, and even our thoughts—we seek to bring glory to Him.
At its core, honoring God is about recognizing His sovereignty and responding with a life of gratitude, obedience, and love. It’s about acknowledging that every good thing in our lives comes from Him and that our lives are not our own. Instead, we are stewards of the time, talents, and resources He has given us.
1. Live with Integrity
One of the most powerful ways we can honor God is by living
with integrity. In a world that often promotes self-interest and compromise,
maintaining honesty, kindness, and humility sets us apart as followers of
Christ. Proverbs 11:3 says, “The integrity of the upright guides them.” When we
walk in integrity, we reflect God’s righteousness to the world.
Jesus taught us that to honor God, we must serve others. He
said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of
mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Serving others in love and humility is a
direct reflection of God's heart and a way to bring His love to those around
us. Whether it’s volunteering, encouraging someone in need, or lending a
helping hand, serving others honors God.
Worship and prayer are essential aspects of honoring God.
They allow us to express our gratitude, seek guidance, and deepen our
relationship with Him. When we make time to worship God—whether in song, quiet
reflection, or corporate worship—we acknowledge His greatness and surrender to
His will. Philippians 4:6 encourages us to “present our requests to God in
prayer and petition,” reminding us that prayer is not just a duty but a
powerful connection with the Creator.
Obedience is a clear way to honor God. Jesus said, “If you
love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). By aligning our lives with God’s Word
and striving to live according to His principles, we show that we trust and
respect His wisdom. While obedience can be challenging at times, especially
when it conflicts with the desires of the world, it leads to blessings and
deeper communion with God.
Each of us has unique gifts and talents. Honoring God means
using those gifts for His glory, rather than for personal recognition or gain.
Whether through our career, hobbies, or ministry, we can reflect God's
creativity and love when we offer our talents back to Him. Colossians 3:23
reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for
the Lord, not for human masters.”
The Reward of Honoring God
When we commit to honoring God with our lives, we find a
deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. Though challenges and hardships are
inevitable, a life that seeks to glorify God is one that is grounded in peace,
joy, and eternal hope. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in God and allow
Him to direct our paths: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on
your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your
paths straight.”
